spelling doubt

Hi, everyone, I have a doubt about the spelling of the word surrounding... is there any possibility of spelling it SUROUNDING with only one R? Two students of mine, who are American, spelt it like that and I wasn`t sure about it.
Thanks a lot, Naty

You are right.  Tell you students to buy a dictionary.

No need to native speakers. Just a quick check in a good dictionary gives the answer that this word is spelled with double "r" American or British.

Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (4th Ed)

surround 1, verb
surround1 W2 /sE5raUnd/ v [T]

Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary

surround
surround /səraʊndverbnoun
 verb [vn]

Just a double r, not  a single. It s a common spelling mistake though.

If they are American it doesn t automatically mean that they can spell correctly. LOL

Here s an answer from a native speaker....never heard of "suround".

I agree with dawnmain....tell them to invest in a dictionary or check on line.

I agree with Malvine, just because someone is a native speaker does not mean they understand or use English very well.
My Dad, until the day he died, always said "he done it"..used to drive me crazy but......
