Hi everybodyEmbarrassed

i know i have been away for a while but i have a good excuse, because i have a baby girl of four months and she was baptized this last weekend so i had toons to do and didn t have the time to stop by.

Anyway the reason of my post is the following, i ve been teaching English in primary schools here in Portugal for a few years but i have never taught first years, and now in the middle of the year i was assigned a first year class that another teacher dropped out of, so what i needed from you were some ideas about what to do with them,
I know that you will say that here we have many great ws and i am counting on them of course but i needed ideas on different activities because they don t know how to write or read and so i needed something to captivate them.

this post is already huuuuge, Please if you have any ideas or experience on teaching so young children let me know i woul be very grateful.

thanks Thumbs Up

Hi! I teach 1st graders and even smaller children (ages4 and5). I do a lot of colouring and cutting activities. I am a big fan of flashcards and I use them in games. Songs are theoretically a good resource but it doesn t always work that good. Sometimes I take a ball or a tedy and I use it to get them to practice vocabulary by repeating a word and passing it to someone else. I also play the "message" game ( they whisper a word to the person next to them and it goes around and the last one says the word out loud).
Do you have a book that you can use? If you want send me a PM with the theme that you are dealing with and I ll see if I can recomend some worksheets or activities.

Hello!!! I am a teacher English in Brazil. I teach kids, 6-13 years old. I do a lot of games:  hope (How old are you? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5..."singing"), flashcards (mime), posters, dominoes, memory game. My children like to cut and glue, puzzles, paint with ink, color, so I do this activities, too.

kisses...

Hi, I also teach in first and second grade. My children from first grade love singing, they have too much energy, so they get bored easily, so you need to keep them busy all the time and use many colors, flash cards as they suggested below, posters, special material such as Play doh, painting with brushes and drawing.

If they still don t read and write very good, try to make activities instead or writting. You re not supposed to teach them writting and reading unless it is in English, right? So don t complicate your life too much and let the other teachers teach them those things.

Good luck.
Regards from Mexico City
