Remembrance Day

November 11 in some countries is Remembrance or Poppy Day. After Halloween celebrations it would be good to mark this quiet and sad holiday with some activities in the classrooms.

Here is a very beautiful video about this day http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M720ICH_Ne0&feature=&p=DF3D8416A779B2DF&index=0&playnext=1

Here are some lovely poems about Remembrance Day (including the famous In Flander s Fields), some poems suitable also for young students http://www.canteach.ca/elementary/songspoems10.html

This is a page with great materials for teaching about Remembrance Day

We call it Veterans Day in the USA. We remember the men and women who serve and served in the military. I m an ignorant American; I didn t know other countries celebrated it as well. It s actually one of our few holidays that doesn t get moved to Monday so that workers get a three-day weekend. Thanks for the new-to-me information!

God, I love the poem "In Flanders Field". It s so very, very touching and always manages to choke me up a bit... We used to recite it in school every Remembrance Day when I was a young girl.

Thank you Baiba for the links. Smile
