hi dear Freind.
How much do they cost? or how much are they? are perfectly correct but only for plural.
The second one can be used only with singular form : How much is a pencil? or how much does a pencil cost?
 Hope I ve helped!
Have a nice evening!!

I think all three versions are correct. The two plural ones, as Mabdel suggested, because you re talking about many items and the singular one (How much is it?) if it is the sum of the prices of each individual item.

Hope I ve helped!
