Usually on a chair and in an armchair . Perhaps it depends how comforable you are and how much the chair wraps itself around you.

On a stool
On a bench
On a dining room/ kitchen chair
In an armchair
In a child s highchair
In a rocking chair
On a settee (Even though it s like a big armchair)
On a couch
On a divan
On a beanbag

Yes, as David said, it is determined by how much it is around you. Even though a couch/sofa has arms, they don t really surround you, because at least one of them is far from you. Apodo s list demonstrates this quite nicely.

I would say that "on" or "in" a beanbag are both fine. You sit on it at first, then you sink down into it, so you are in it.

Yes, yes, and yes--I agree with all of you (I always say "in a beanbag")
