This is going to be a bit long-winded, but here goes.  Start with emotions -- pictures cut out from magazines and have your students guess/infer how the person is feeling.  Second, use the emotions cards on BogglesWorld - again, this will help your students understand /infer.  Third used cut out pictures from interesting magazines like National Geographic.  Have your students OWI --observe  -- I see...., Wonder (Question) I wonder why/what/how/etc and finally INFER.  Maybe... or Perhaps ......  Doing these steps BEFORE you actually get into text will teach your students how to approach inference, which many teachers and students don t understand.  This technique works.  I use it and even my very low students understand the process.  After the pictures -- get into text and do the same thing OWI.  The scaffolding will help your students be successful.  Go to this reading expert s sight -- good luck  dt
