 Dear colleagues,
in how many different ways can you report this sentence using "suggest"?

"Why don t you study Italian, Mark?", Ann said

Thanks a lot

hi Isabel,

I would say :

Ann suggested Mark study Italian.

Ann asked Mark if he would not like to study Italian.

Ann told Mark it may be a good idea to study Italian.

Ann asked Mark if he had thought to study Italian.

Plenty of hugs dear.

Maryse.

Anne suggested that Mark study Italian.
suggest + bare infinitive Wink

edit: actually this is called subjunctive, but as a student I had been taught its a bare infinitive and I continue to use the term, as its easier for my students to remember

Have a look at this website. I think it is good enough to clarify what you need and more about the reported speech.

Thank you all, you motivated me to refresh my mind and study the reported speech again!

The possible answers:

1- Ann suggested (that) Mark should study Italian.
2- Ann suggested (that) Mark study Italian without (should).
3- suggest (followed by a gerund): Ann suggested studying Italian.

Good night

Suha
