I think that story telling is one of the best forms of practising language.
Firstly, learners are actually creating a story, which is interesting for them. From a linguistic perspective, it enhances coherent narration (discursive speech), the use of linking/ time words, tenses...the list may go on and on!

Reading aloud to your students models the language, pronunciation, and intonation.  There is a curruculum called Learner �s Lives as Curriculum.  http://online.sfsu.edu/~gailw/professional/learners.html  It used the students life experiences to learn English instead of or in addition to a textbook.  Learners dictate or write their their life stories. The teacher corrects mistakes, makes cloze exercises from the writings. the students share their experiences with the other members of the class, if they are ready. Students learn vocabulary that is student directed (and therefore meaningful to them) rather than textbook driven or teacher driven.
