past continuous in reported speech

I have a question regarding Reported Speech.
When the reporting verb is in the past, I know that some verb tenses can change or not.
If the verb is in the past progressive some grammars say you must change it into the past perfect progressive while some grammars say it is not necessary to change it.

My example is:

"One week ago I was lying on the beach", Christine said

Options:
Christine said one week before she had been lying on the beach

Christine said one week before she was lying on the beach

Can you tell me if the second option is correct? If so, is there any case when the change to past perfect progressive is advisable or compulsory?

Many thanks
