Help mothertongues!

Dear friends and colleagues,
can you help me with this doubt, please?

Can you say ......he went to sea at 20 years old

or should you say only ......he went to sea at the age of 20?

Thank you for your help in advance,
Elena

Hi Elena,
I m "just" Italian, but your doubt is also mine so I ll tell you what I ve been told by a "very experienced" teacher:

at 20 years old is not correct because the expression "years old" needs the verb to be.

Actually, I ve found it in many texts...

Anyway, I usually tell my Ss they should say:

at 20
at the age of 20
when he was 20 (years old)

Now, let s wait for the mothertongue teachers opinions...

Ciao
Chiara

At the age of 20 is not wrong, it is more natural though to say when he was 20 .
