Vocab Question

Hi there,

As I know, different nicknames are given to different names. For example, a person named Veronica is called Ronnie, a person called Richards is called Dick.
But they are rather fixed names given by family and friends.

What if we call a person a totally different name. A totally newly created title. Would that also be called a "nickname"?

To elaborate a little, the examples you gave are diminutives of the names, so the other names "given" by family and friends are really nicknames more than your examples are. They are all nicknames, though.

Some of the more interesting nicknames I have experienced are with my students from Mongolia. Their names were unpronounceable to me, but luckily they ALL had nicknames. Naran, Sara, Sucki... lol all to replace names like Naranbaatar, Sarantsatsral or Sukhbataar. They always had a great laugh at my attempts, then they would kindly tell me their nicknames. It was a great ice breaker. :-)
