I know it better as "throw a (dinner) party"-which means to plan/host a (dinner) party.
 
I �m not sure how formal or informal it is though

I agree with Douglas that "throw a dinner party" would be much more common. Without "party", we would be much more likely to say "have a dinner" or "host a dinner".
