Is d silent in ......?

Hi,

Is the letter d silent in this word: gadget?

I heard many times on dictionary.com

I think it isn t pronounced.  What do you think ?

Thanks a lot.

Yes, it is silent. /gaj-it/

The d modifies the g to a j - we don t say "gaggit" but "gajit". So the d is technically silent but the dg together make a particular sound.

I would say that "gadget" does actually contain a "d" sound, but not using your vocal chords. It contains two sounds:

1. the "d" of "dog", phonetically (d)
2. the "j" of "television", phonetically (ʒ)

These two create a sound like in "jazz" or "Argentinian", which phonetically is written (dʒ).

Of course, accents differ in English and maybe someone has a different way of saying this, but this is what I would say.

Actually, these sounds (dʒ) and (ʒ).are difficult for Arab.

danygera is right; the "j" sound has the two parts he or she stated. I would say the "d" in gadget, judge, and other such words isn t technically silent like silent "e" or the "b" in debt, but it is redundant or unnecessary for proper pronunciation.
