What would be a good definition of "attention span"

What would be a good definition of "attention span"

In this lovely poem by Henry Normal, what would be a good definition of "attention span"?

The house is not the same since you left
The cooker is angry it blames me
The TV tries desperately to stay busy
But occasionally I catch it staring out of the window
The washing-ups feeling sorry for itself again
It just sits there saying
Whats the point, whats the point?
The curtains count the days
Nothing in the house will talk to me
I think your armchairs dead
The kettle tried to comfort me at first
But you know what its attention span is like
Ive not told the plants yet
They think youre still on holiday
The bathroom misses you
I hardly see it these days
It still cant believe you didnt take it with you
The bedroom wont even look at me
Since you left it keeps its eyes closed
All it wants to do is sleep, remembering better times
Trying to lose itself in dreams
It seems like its taken the easy way out
But at night I hear the pillows
Weeping into the sheets.

@tsyr, Thanks a lot. There seems to be no equivalent of the phrase in my language. I wonder if there is something similar in Russian?

"Having a short attention span" means one cannot pay attention for long.  Google translator says: "რომელსაც მოკლე ყურადღება span" in Georgian and " " in Russian.  Usually it s used to describe kids with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), but kettles and pots often have a similar problem. Hope this helps. Peter

@Peter Hardy, Thank you very much. Now I fully understand the meaning and can go on to teach the poem with more confidence. Nice note about kettles and pots :):)
