please help me choose the correct preposition:
His shoes are made __________ soft leather. ( from / of )

Made of, since that is what the shoes are. "Made from" is used when the substance is transformed into something else, or mixed with other things. The shoes are still leather, so they are made of leather.
 
Leather is made from the skin of an animal (since it is transformed from skin to leather).
