Plurals of words ending in -o

Hi there !

I m really puzzled with the plural of the words ending in -o  as I can´t find a general rule to explain when they  add -s or -es . How can you explain that  the plural of t"omato " is tomatoes  but  the plural of piano is "pianos  ". Thanks for your comments in advance !

Words of English derivation take es e.g. heroes, tomatoes, potatoes.
Foreign words adopted by English do not e.g. ghettos.
Piano is a shortened form for painoforte, so I guess abbreviations don t get the extra e.
Names don t get the extra e, e.g. torpedos.

Well I knew that shortened forms just added "S"  , for example , photos  and I didn´t know about " pianoforte " !!!
