lodging?!

Hi, Is the letter d pronounced in the word "lodging" or is it silent? Thank you.

This will sound strange, but I would say that it is pronounced, but not in a way that the average person would notice. So, for simplicity, I would say that it isn t really pronounced.

I would say it is pronounced. There is just a tiny touch of the tongue to the palate which blocks the airflow. It sounds incorrect if you don t do that - to me anyway.

 /ˈlɒdʒɪŋ/    correct

 /ˈlɒ ʒɪŋ/   not correct

The j or soft g sound in English is an affricate, with the /dʒ / combination Apodo has in the middle of the "correct" pronunciation. The point of contact of the tongue is palatalized, further back in the mouth than the typical /d/, which is typically articulated in English on the alveolar ridge. The alveolar /d/ is not pronounced; the palatalized /d/ which is part of the "j" affricate is pronounced.

By the way, the voiceless equivalent is /tʃ /, the English "ch" sound.

But, Apodo, my point was that the  /dʒ/  is the sound of the "g", so the d isn t really pronounced.

I, too, think it is pronounced.  It s almost like the sound of combining a D and a J together.

Wow, some very learned answers. Lodge. Haj. Same final sound. Make of that what you will.
