Hi all, hope you are fine.

concerning family relations, what do we say: Who is (X) to (Y)? or what is (X) to (Y)?

e.g: Who/ what is John to Mary?

              John is Mary s husband.

                                                  Thanks in advance

If I was asking this myself, I d ask "How is John related to Mary?"

Of the options you included, they would probably both be acceptable, but I think that s partly because they are abbreviated questions that would be understood in context. Of the two I d lean towards "What is John to Mary?" as the one that would be used more often of the two.

what is X to Y ? is most probably what I would use .The reason is that we are talking here about "a relation".IN OTHER WORDS what is the relation of X to Y?
