Dear colleagues,

Is there any difference in meaning between surveillance and monitoring (as a noun not a verb)?
Would it be correct to use them both in the following sentence?

This patient was the only case of cancer under (surveillance/monitoring).
These cancer (surveillance/monitoring) programmes are now widely implemented despite not being subjected to clinical trial.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Hi Caren

Good question, and yes, there is a difference.

Surveillance mostly relates to criminal type activities but it is used for medical conditions. It implies intense monitoring to catch something or someone and to then immediately act on who or what is caught.

Monitoring is the ongoing action to check on, and report on, changes to a place or person

In your given example, surveillance would be the correct choice.

This link gives you an example of the difference in cancer cases as does this one. More results here.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Jayho
