And or Or?
|
Hi dear colleagues, time to ask for help... I know that we use AND in affirmative sentences and OR in negative ones , but I m wondering... I can t play basketball AND volleyball very well is wrong? After all, I can play... Thanks a lot for your time, Chiara

I understand your sentence this way: I can t play basketball AND volleyball very well = I can play basketball and volleyball but none of both I can play very well.
I think, you can also say the same message like this: I can play neither basketball nor volleyball very well.

I m not sure if your sentence is wrong, but a native wouldn t say it, unless he meant that he can t play them at the same time very well. For an un-coordinated person, we say "He can t walk and chew gum (at the same time)." Bruce |

"I can play basketball and volleyball but not very well" it could be a solution ... I d say |

What about: "I can t play basketball nor volleyball very well."? |

Using NOR is very formal sounding. OR sounds much better to me. |

Also, "I can t play basketball nor volleyball" doesn t sound natural. We usually don t use "nor" without "neither". Bruce |
