Differences between "Sports" and "sport"

Can you help me about the differences between "sport" and "sport". Is "sports" a plural noun of "sport"? So why do we have "sports car"?

Thank Kohai, but I am still confused about those replies. So the usage of "sport" in this situation is similar to the usage of  "food"?
