Order of adjectives

Order of adjectives

What happens when we have two "opinion" adjectives followed by a third one of "size"?

Eg: A cozy, comfortable, small flat?
      A comfortable, cozy small flat?

Thanks

Manuela,

I think that it is a matter of personal preference as to how the sentence sounds when it is spoken.

For me, I would choose the first sentence. It has a slightly poetic tone to it.

"A cosy, comfortable, small flat."

For those Students and Teachers who use mnemonics to remember things, such as the Order of Adjectives in English, here are two.

OSASCOMP: Opinion, Size, Age, Shape, Colour, Origin, Material, Purpose.

Open scissors against shaped column, originally matched purple.

I agree, they re nonsense, but some people find them very useful.

A small, cosy, comfortable flat.

Edit: I think, as Les says, personal preference comes into it and English is so flexible.

I agree with Lynne, that small works best at the beginning. Also, I think cozy is best before comfortable (being the same kind of adjective, and very similar in meaning), mostly because it is shorter.

I would also put size  in front of opinion in this sentence, contrary to Les s rule..

Redcamarocruiser:

I don t disagree with you!

I said: "It s a matter of personal preference".

Of the two alternatives given, I chose the first one.

Plus, "OSASCOMP" is not MY rule --- it s an often-quoted suggestion in Grammar Books, indicating the Order of Adjectives.

However, some people may think that the rule is a grammatical, shapeless, 1930 s, colourless, old-fashioned, jumble-of-words, useless, huge distraction.

They re entitled to their opinion!

But, many non-native English speakers find it useful as a memory-jogger.

All the Best,

Les Douglas.

Here is a better mnemonic for OSASCOMP:
A wonderful, slim, youthful in spirit,  triangular, white, Geordie, silken, useful fellow!!!  LOL

One of my students sent me this video.
If the link doesn t work, just try writing "order of adjectives professor grammar" and choose the video with the old fashioned looking professor ☺
