A problem

Hi everyone,
I have to write a survey report and I m not sure about two sentences. I would be really grateful if you could help me. So these are the sentences:

The same number of men and women questioned consume
... (or should there be consumes?)

Of the 76 people interviewed 47% of women and 37% of men claim... (or claims?)

Thanks :)

Hi!

According to the Oxford dictionaty if the noun is plural the verb is plural: 65% of children play computer games.
When the noun is singular, the verb is singular, but if the noun stands for a group of people it can be both (Sing. in AmE and Sing. or Plural in BrE) - 80% of the work force is/are against the strike.

As for the first one I think it can be seen as a group so I d use "consume", but I cannot be sure.

I agree with Mena, both the sentences you ve written are correct as they are with the 3rd person plural.
