English worksheet: Two words in one - set 17 Two words in one - set 17

Two words in one, as the name suggests, is an activity in which students are given 20 small cards to match up to create 10 new words. I find it best to do this activity in teams of 4 and always with a level of competition to it. Most of the words are compounds, but in other sets that I´ve created the words have no relationship (man + go, thin + king). A good way to start this activity is by playing a drawing game called two words in one. Ss are shown a word and have to draw two pictures that represent the words within the word. For example, if the word was sunflower, the S would draw a sun for the first picture and a flower for the second. Once the Ss have correctly matched up the words, using dictionaries to aide, I ask my Ss to look at the words, individual and compounded, and ask me about the meaning of any words that they are unsure of. Then, the opportunities are endless; you can play pelmanism, give each S x amount of cards and ask them which is their favourite, and why, ask them to make up a story using the words, ask them to find word families, point out pronunciation (e.g. we say ´car´ and ´pet´ but ´carpet´ is pronounced differently), have a mill drill where each S is given a card and has to find their ´match´ by describing their word, etc... I have also created two extra W/Ss that accompany this activity. The first is a matching exercise where Ss look at the word and draw a line to the correct definition. The second is a gapfill where the Ss have to read a sentence and fill-in the gap with the correct word.
