I use the sentence "Her first nurse works early on the journey." to show all the children all of the different sounds of er. When they want to spell correctly and are not sure of which er to use I can direct them to the right one eg the ir of first for the word bird. We also add words to the lists as they use them in their writing or in the spelling lesson. Hope this is useful.
