Whos the Leader of China
In this parody of Abbott and Costellos classic sketch about baseball, "Whos on First," President George W. Bush questions Condoleezza Rice about Hu, the new leader of China. You can find an audio recording of this sketch on the Internet to play after the students have read this dialogue in pairs.

Interrogative Snakes & Ladders
In this grammar game, students have to determine which questions are correct and which need to be changed. The full instructions are given on page 2. I used the font Zeal for the arrows in the squares on the left and right sides of the game board. (Inspired by "Grammar Games" by Mario Rinvolucri, CUP.)

Derek the Human iPod
"60 Minutes" has a fabulous story on Derek Paravicini, the human iPod (so called because once he hears a song, he can play it perfectly), who is a musical genius, but at the same time blind and severely retarded. (He cannot count to three or button his shirt.) You can view the 14-minute video here: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/07/27/60mi...

Life in Victorian Britain - Worksheet
This excellent documentary on Victorian Britain gives good insight into all aspects of life in 19th century Britain. The vocabulary load is high, but advanced students find it gripping. The most notable sections (which can be used in isolation) of this 50-minute film are Rural and Urban Poverty, Workhouses, and Innovation and Invention). (I showed ...

Rowan Atkinson - Return of Constable Savage
An encore from Rowan Atkinsons first TV show, "Not the Nine OClock News," we see the conscientious Constable Savage reprimanded again for arresting the same man 1,254 times, including for "impersonating a member of the general public." The hard-working constable has also arrested the mans wife and son for "breaking and entering a boiled egg." ...

Havent Met You Yet
This dual exercise focuses on phrasal verbs and listening in Michael Bubls popular song. Have the students do the matching exercise first, then hand out the gapped lyrics and have them try to find words that fit in the gaps. (Many of the missing words are from the matching exercise.) Finally play the song so they can check their choices and fill ...

Writing Assignment for "Catcher in the Rye"
I sincerely believe this is the best teaching idea I have ever come up with. After studying J. D. Salingers "Catcher in the Rye," students have to imagine that they are Holden Caulfied, who is studying at their institution. This hand-out explains that they have to write a paper in the first-person telling about a typical day for Holden in their in...

RSVP - Scientists Ball
Heres an enjoyable pairwork exercise where students match the names of famous scientists with their responses to an invitation to a Scientists Ball to celebrate Albert Einsteins being named "Time" Magazines "Person of the Century." This is based on an e-mail that circulated on the Internet, but several of the contributions are MINE, along with ...
