COIK Lesson
COIK stands for "Clear Only If Known" which is, unfortunately, how many of us feel when someone gives us poor directions and then says, "You can´t miss it." To improve my students´ direction-giving abilities, I tell them they must defuse a bomb by phone. I put the students back-to-back, and the expert who is supposedly on the other side of the city tells the caller how to arrange the bomb parts exactly like the defused bomb in front of the expert. Give the students 1 to 3 minutes to get this done; and when the timer goes off, carefully look at what they´ve done to see if they survived. Their classmates should tell them where things started to go wrong. As they begin to realize direction-giving should be a two-way process, and they need to give their partners plenty of context, they will rapidly improve.
