English powerpoint: World History Part C: Kingdoms, Exploration, American Revolution World History Part C: Kingdoms, Exploration, American Revolution

Part C from a set of slides used to introduce/review World History (from a U.S. perspective). I print them out, 6 or 9 per page, then cut them up into separate small flash cards. Students work in groups (preferably) to sort the pictures out into chronological order. This helps them focus on tools of history such as comparing drawings/photos to see which came first; encourages language development related to history as students find ways to explain their ideas; and provides a historical framework which teachers and students then fill in with details. (I reduced file size as much as possible, but still had to separate the slides into 8 uploads since they are very visual--perfect for ESL students, but bulky to export. Sorry.)

The dark ages concept is something modern historiography has long discarded (perhaps not from an American perspective.....)

Dark / Middle Ages???          posted by mrkib 0
Interesting comment about discarding the term "Dark Ages." I am not a professional historian so do not know all the latest usage. I do know that from the American perspective the term is still in use to some degree. So, how would others describe those centuries?

A related point: I simplified World History to certain crucial time periods / events so that my American students could have a broad framework to begin building from, also so the preview/review activity I use (the kids sorting them) would not be altogether too time consuming and difficult. This required deleting other points that would be included in a broader multicultural history (i.e. Pre-Columbian America, African Kingdoms, Asian kingdoms, etc.). I welcome criticism and suggestions of how my basic slides can or should be refined--always keeping in mind the length/quantity limitations.

By the way, I decided on just 24 so that I could use PowerPoint´s print handouts, 6 per page, option.
