Famous people of the past
This powerpoint can be used as an introduction to the simple past: students see photos of famous people, what these people are remembered for in one simple sentence containing a regular or irregular verb in the simple past and they associate the information to a date. They can then rephrase with ago, after it is introduced in class (I usually do the subtraction with them on the board).
