A CULTURALLY CHINESE VERSION OF THE WEDDING GIFT (text and questions)
I rewrote this story with the purpose of making it culturally relevant for Chinese English majors. I also tried to make it interactive, with instructions for students to write a title and an ending. I also explained many words in English in footnotes to try to wean students from the attitude/ habit of looking up every unfamiliar word and writing a Chinese equivalent.
Directions for use: Students retell the story in pairs; students find a new partner and then the teacher distributes the questions--one set of odd questions to one student and the even questions to the other student; students then find new partners and give their opinion about the story (what they liked and what they did not like, and reasons for this); students sit in a circle and the teacher at random asks several students to share their opinions; the students are regrouped in sets of three and have 5-10 minutes to identify issues related to the story, etc.
The teacher can do other activities, e.g., dictation using the story as material.
The students will have read this story in Chinese in textbook(s) and are thus generally familiar with the story. They can also be asked how the story was changed to fit China and how successful they think that change was--how the story did and did not reflect China´s realities and, if they were going to make suggestions for changes to a China-adaption of the story, what would they (the suggestions) be?
