The Hunger Games - explanation game
This is a game that can be used when students are reading the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. First of all, you need to create "cards" from the template (takes some cutting up...) The cards are divided into five different categories. 1) C= Characters 2) S=setting 3) HG= Hunger games specific words 4) M=miscellaneous words from the book 5) L= literature (words connected with literature, eg plot, setting etc.)
The game is designed to be played in groups of four. The students compete in pairs against another pair. Taking turns, one student takes a card, describes it to his/her partner without saying any of the words given on the card. This gets repeated until the time is up. I think itīs suitable to let each round last for 1.5 minutes. The team that isnīt describing will keep track of the time. After the time is up, itīs the other teamīs turn. Repeat until there are no more cards.
The winners are the pair that has collected the highest number of cards.
The main objective of this game is for students to develop language strategies to use when they might not know a specific word.
