THE CURRY GAME
This is a great game to play with elementary school students. Students first make groups of maybe 3 or 4. Each group gets a curry pot sheet and a recipe card. The ingredient card is used to make small tickets so you´ll have to print out multiple copies and make small cards of the ingredients. Each person or group is given one ingredient which they are in charge of (I suggest 10 small ingredient cards per group). They are now the "chicken store" or the "tomato store".
In their group, students make a recipe for their "Original Curry". They may use no more than 10 items and they must be diverse enough to be delicious. For example the tomato store cannot make a "tomato curry" from 10 tomatoes. They can vary the ingredients like "2 chicken", "3 potato", "1 yogurt", etc. As long as the total number of items is 10.
Once students have settled on a curry recipe, they must go out to other groups and collect all their individual ingredients by using target grammar.
Older kids can ask: "Do you have_______?"
If yes, the other student may ask: "How many?" and when answered, give the appropriate number of ingredient cards. If the student does not have the right card, he can simply say "Sorry."
Younger kids can just use "Please." For example: "Tomato, please?" or "2 tomatoes, please."
It can be a race to see who can gather all ingredients first or who has the most interesting tasting curry. Either or.
It´s a really fun game once you get the hang of it though it does require a bit of prep beforehand and practice of the target language. Be sure ALL students know how to say ALL ingredient names before starting!!!
