Creative Sentence Building
I used this activity after we finished Roald Dahl´s The Witches. I explained how Dahl uses very descriptive sentences to help the reader "see" the personalities of the characters, and add emotion to the boy´s struggle to beat the Grand High Witch. We did this as a class, starting with five animals in the noun column, then did adjectives, verbs, and adverbs one at a time. Afterward, each kid used a sentence strip to write his favorite sentece, labeled each part of speech in a different color, and drew a small illustration to accompany the sentence. For example, a kid might write "Silly worm wiggles happily" and draw a little worm with a big smile.
