| | Pronunciation - Vowel Sounds - Phonetic Symbols vs. "TEST" Words
I have been teaching ESL for more than 30 years. When I was in university, I studied Phonetics, so that I would TRULY understand how we actually MAKE every sound in English.
However, I discovered that using the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) symbols for vowel sounds led to 2 problems: different countries use different symbols for what are, to us, the same sound; and using these symbols meant that learners had to learn ANOTHER language (Phonetic Symbols). So eventually, I found that using "test" words was FAR more helpful in helping learners become self- and peer-correcting that the IPA ever was!
I have used this system successfully with learners of ALL levels. Try this out, and let me know how it works for you. Thanks!
