English powerpoint: Teaching Anki in the computer room Teaching Anki in the computer room

This powerpoint is an aid to help you teach students autonomy and spaced repetition with a flashcard program called Anki (http://ankisrs.net/). Use this powerpoint in the technology class with at least one computer for the students to follow your directions. Lesson plan: *Before the class: set up Anki on all the pcs that you will need. Create an English deck for each and make sure that the card setting is ´cloze´ instead of ´basic´. You can learn more about Anki here: http://alexvermeer.com/anki-essentials/ It is optional but highly recommended to create before the lesson some example cards with useful vocabulary to fill the deck before the students add their own cards, especially if time is short, because students will be able to experience a "proper" deck with 10-20 words plus the other 6-10 that they may be creating. 1) Powerpoint, first discussion slide: have them consider what learning methods they use outside of the classroom, and which are better for them or more useful in general. Talk in pairs or groups and invite open-class feedback. 2) Make a list of words from the previous lesson or have the students read a text a bit above their level and choose which words they want to learn (allow for time to read in this case, and test their general understanding of the text). 3) Have them create one sentence with each word they have chosen. You can vary the number of words or sentences and whether it is individual or pair work depending on the amount of computers and the time that you have. If you only have one computer in a large class, have the students take turns to add cards and keep the others busy doing something else in the meantime. 4) Use the powerpoint to give guidance to your students as they create the cards. 5) Have them practise with the finished deck. You can guide them through the reviewing process using the powerpoint. 6) To test their knowledge in front of the class, write the reviewed words on the board, with ample space between them. Have the students line up in front of the board in two teams. Give the students first on the lines a piece of chalk/board pen or a flyswatter. You will either show a picture of the word or describe what it is, give an example, etc, and the students will try to guess the word as fast as possible, hitting or circling it. After each word, the students at the board return to the back of the queue and pass their pen/swatter. Remember to give points to the fastest team and keep count of their score on the board or piece of paper. This is highly motivating for students and it shows that they have become much more familiar with the vocabulary of the lesson. 7) The last powerpoint slide contains discussion topics to get the students thinking about what they did during the lesson and whether it can be useful outside of class, which is the aim of the activity: encouraging student autonomy and making them aware that they are responsible for their own revision. I hope this was useful. Happy teaching!
