Abbott & Costello - Who’s on First (text)
"The second funniest sketch of the 20th century" is what "Time" magazine called this in their millennium issue back in 2000. I don’t think Bud Abbott and Lou Costello ever performed this sketch exactly the same way twice, so the different audio and video versions that you come across will differ somewhat.
It is super fast, but upper-intermediate students do usually get it on the second or third listening. I’d recommend helping the students pronounce the ballplayers’ names before listening.
This is the perfect example of the straight man/funny man technique.
This sketch was featured in the film "Rain Man," who recited it whenever he got nervous. At the end of the film, Raymond is attracted to a TV where Abbott and Costello are performing the routine.
