I started it off by writing 1939-1971-2009 on the board and asking students to elicit ideas about what these years might refer to and which historical events happened in this span of time. Then we did the lyrics in groups of 2-3, then we watched Tina and Beyonce perform Proud Mary, then read the biography... Do I need to say how impressed they were with the Lady?
