BOM GAME : Game Type : Card Game Aim : Practising Conditionals Types 0, 1, 2, 3 Age : 15+ Group Size : 4-6 (for better. But more, possible) Time : At least 10 minutes Preparation : Conditional sentences are divided into two parts on cards. Cut all the cards from the dotted lines. There should be four cards for each player. (16 cards for 4 players, 20 for 5, etc.) So you can add new conditionals or reduce the present ones according to the number of players. How To Play : 1. A player mixes the cards and gives four cards in total to each player one by one. 2. The player to the right of the dealer starts the game putting the most useless card for making a correct and meaningful conditional sentence onto the desk (or floor, etc.) . 3. The next player on the right takes the card on the desk and checks if he/she can make two correct conditional sentences. If not, he/she puts a card on the desk. 4. The player who has two correct and meaningful conditional sentences is the winner. He/She should make sure that he/she has put the fifth card onto the desk and has four cards in his/her hand at the end. After leaving the fifth card he/she shouts ‘BOM!’. Variation 1 : If the players enjoy the game, you can continue with it. This time the other players should put their hands on the winner’s hand as quickly as possible. The winner of the game gets 5 points, the second player to put hand on his/hers gets 3 points, the third gets 2 and the last gets 1 point. After a few games, they add up the points and the player having the most points is the winner at the end. Variation 2 : You can prepare many more sentence parts, and then you may give 8, 10 or more cards to each student, and may want them to make as many correct conditional sentences as possible. They may continue the game by putting a card on the desk at each time. After a few tours, you may finish the game. The one having the most correct sentences is the winner. Variation 3 : You can apply many grammar subjects to this game. (This game is played among children in Turkey, but cards have only names of the players and the aim is to have four cards having the same name on them. I adapted it for the conditionals- learner34)
