English worksheet: Comparing Oliver Twist Remakes Comparing Oliver Twist Remakes

The workhouse scene where Oliver Twist asks for more food is one of the most famous in all English literature. About 2 dozen film versions of this novel have been made (the earliest back in 1909!). Show the class 2 or 3 versions of the workhouse scene (many are available on YouTube) leading up to Oliver asking for more food, and have the students take notes. They then discuss their perceptions in groups of 3. The idea of a discussion exercise using different film versions of the same scene comes from the excellent O.U.P. book, "Film." For your convenience, I have added the lyrics to the song sung by the boys in the 1968 musical, "Oliver!" in case you decide to use the 1968 musical version.
