My students worked in groups to critique advertising in both American and Japanese womenīs magazines, then compared the ads to ads for men in menīs magazines. In the case of menīs magazines, it was more the absence of the factors we found in womenīs magazines that was startling. Being alerted to how gender roles are created through gaze and camera angle was especially enlightening for them.
