							Free Writing to Music
Open your studentīs creativity and get them away from the rigidity of textbooks. Play a unique song and have students write down either a story about what they feel is happening - OR - just words that come to mind when they listen/feel the music. There are some questions at the top of the page to get them started, and I usually call out some additional ones during the song. Can be challenging at first for some shy students not used to a teacher asking them to be creative and open! I often prompt them with questions for example "what colour is this song," "where are you" and "who is with you."
SONG DIRECTIONS: I play the song once first with them just listening. The second time, they can write. Sometimes they want a third go if it has taken them a bit to jump out of their shell. I suggest a song without lyrics - something that is out of the ordinary. My selection includes: Australian digeridoo, Native Canadian chanting, Irish folk fiddle, African drumming, Greek island music, etc.
