Watching / listening from a scene in John Waters 1988 film Hairspray when the lead character and her mother shop for clothes. It´s best done when viewing the entire film because then the vocabulary can be understood in more of a context, but it can also work as a stand alone exercise to improve listening skills.
I´ve used the film Hairspray and these accompanying resources with groups of 11 - 14 year olds and they´ve enjoyed the activities. Hairspray is a comedy musical which also deals with serious issues of racism and the US civil rights movement. My students also did a brief comprehension exercise using footage from youtube - Hairspray is a good resource to use for this.
