Australia: Make a brochure about your hometown
This is one preparing task, next to another one, for a speaking activity. Devide your class in two groups (by lot for example)- one group will be Australian teenagers, the other group (in my case, but adaptable) German teenagers (see other worksheet as well). Both groups have to gather information about Australia (geography, history, climate, flora & fauna, Australian teenagers etc) - but from different perspectives. On an arranged date both groups meet for the first time and the foreign teenagers are willing to plan a trip around Australia - with the help of the native teenagers.
This worksheet, in combination with the travel plan worksheet for the other group, is a nice preparation for a lesson full of speaking. Students are asked to meet in a fictional situation and to exchange knowledge about Australia. Later they can presetn their travel plans or make posters.
I used this as a project for teaching the topic Australia (they gathered all the information suitable to their task while working on different texts in the books) and to teach how to have a conversation with a stranger. It worked out quite nicely.
