Grammar Reversi/ Othello (for 60 irregular verbs, 8 by 8 board, 3 forms)
brief outline: play othello while saying what is on the front and backside of the cards played
time: a whole lesson for big boards
- target: pairs of things (irreg verbs, jap-engl.., definitions phrasal verbs,Âc)
- setting: in pairs or double pairs (8-9 groups)
-Items/ preperation:
- 16 (for 4 by 4 board) 32 (for 6 by 6 board) or 64 (for 8 by
8 board)
- double-sided square cards
- 6 by 6 or 8 by 8 board (for 2nd graders)
- 4 by 4 board (for 1st graders), allow diagonal lines, say
all expressions on both sides when laying down the card
- Goal: get own pieces at both ends of a row of your partnerÂfs
pieces and then turn your partnerÂfs color pieces over
- How to play:
0. Check who knows Othello, drill key expressions
1. Build groups of 4 (pairs play against each other) and give
boards
2. Let HRT explain rules (jap. expl. on back of board)
* can be short, Basic rules 1 and 2
- Basic rule 1: word/ phrase black side, another w/ph white side. Before turn over piece to make your color, say what on other side. If correct,ÂgwinÂhthat piece, leave turned over. If not, leave as it was
* peeping is ok, if you have a big number of cards !!!
- Basic rule 2: any card, or sequence of cards of one team which
are directly adjacent to each other, can be attacked by being
sandwiched between two enemy cards, either horizontally or vertically
- Where to place pieces: adjacent to one of pieces that are already on board Âc some pieces change to your color.
3. Give Demonstration with HRT (focus on some aspects)
let s. make circle around you, show
- how to start (middle, no corners allowed until the end)
- how to turn pieces around (by sandwiching horizontally, vertically and diagonally)
- how to lay down own pieces (say what is on both sides)
- End: the person with the most cards of one color wins
4.. Break s. into double pairs, give cards, let them review their cards for 2 minutes
