Being in Japan, most students are cripplingly shy at times. I used to have a lot of problems doing communicative or role play activities until I started assigning the students role cards to use at the same time. All of a sudden, they had a mask to hide behind and they really enjoyed being someone else, found it less risky; so they talked more! Before you use the cards, you may want to change the names as they were there for my amusement. Also be sure to tell the students to use their ideas to "flesh-out" the roles.
