This lesson touches on popular toys over the decades, from the 1920īs - 2000īs. I started the lesson with the YouTube video "Slime after Slime," a parody song about 2017/2018īs kid/pre-teen trend of making and playing with homemade slime. I played the video 2 times. The first time they were just to listen, and the second time I asked them to write any new vocabulary so we could go over it. After we reviewed vocab, I reminded the kids that slime is an uncountable noun and we reviewed the rules of uncountable nouns so they were prepared for the following questions: 1) Do you play with slime? 2) What is the recipe for slime? 3) Is your house anything like this video? 4) Is it expensive to make slime? 5) Why is it so popular? 6) Do you trade slime with your friends? 7) Have you ever damaged a rug or furniture with your slime? 8) What is the funniest part of that video? 9) Are you allowed to bring slime to school? 10) Do you think slime will be popular for a long time? _______________________________________ MAIN ACTIVITY: Write ī1920īs on the board and show the kids the picture of the boy and his radio flyer wagon. If they can, have the kids name the toy. Elicit the next decade and write it on the board. Show the kids the picture of Walt Disney and the stuffed Mickey Mouse. Elicit "Mickey Mouse." Repeat this for the 1930īs - 2000īs. The document Iīve shared is meant to be cut up, each brief history into four parts. I laminated them so I can re-use them. There are 9 decades/toys/stories, so this can be used for a big class. Hand out a cut of story to each group. The aim is for the group to put the stories in the correct order and then as a group, present their toy/inventor to the class. I asked the class comprehension questions after each groupīs presentation. This can all be graded and adapted, depending on the level. ______________________________ This lesson took about an hour, but we had to rush through the final two stories as time was running short. I would have liked 1.5 hours for this lesson. I hope you enjoy this! Let me know how it went in the comments. :)
