I designed this for intermediate adult migrant ESL learners in Australia, to meet the competency-based learning outcome ´Demonstrate understanding of a news article´ in a unit of work on the environment. The worksheet adheres to minimum construct validity guidelines by addressing global and discrete comprehension skills needed to successfully carry out this kind of task in real life. I found I needed to pre-teach quite a bit of lexis, including idiomatic expressions; I did this with edhelper-generated vocabulary worksheets using words and expressions from the article.
