YELLOW SUBMARINE LISTENING ACTIVITY SET
PRE-LISTENING ACTIVITIES
Students will be given a cut up version of the song and told to sort the lyric by simple past and present tense in groups of four. As they do this, the teacher will walk around, listen in, and ask guiding questions to students who seem confused about why certain verses go where, and note vocabulary or sayings that they do not understand. Students who are done before others will underline any words or phrases they do not know. These will be addressed after the during-listening activities.
D
URING LISTENING
Students will be provided the full set of lyrics for the song, with graphics. They will underline every verb as we listen to “Yellow Submarine” the first time. The second time, they will write a “←” if that verb is being used in a past simple sentence and a “(down arrow)“ If it is being used in the simple present. They will then pair and share with their peers and discuss why they chose to mark certain verbs in certain ways (in their own language if they have to) before turning back to me.
POST-LISTENING ACTIVITIES
The teacher will write down key verbs being used in the song (live, are, begin, have/has) and have students conjugate the verbs in a t chart for past and simple present as a class. The teacher will then remind the students that the objective of the day is to write a four sentence long letter to a penpal. In order to prepare for this, the students are given a minute to think about what they would tell a penpal in Korean, and then to help the teacher make a list of verbs that they will need in English for the letter (they should know quite a few). Examples: leave, come, start, study, read. If students do not know the word in English but are feeling ambitious, they will be free as they write their letters to look them up in their dictionaries.
Before allowing students to write their letters on their own, the teacher will write the example letter on the bottom of the handouts document and help students conjugate the sentences there one last time as a class. The rest of class and homework time (if necessary) will be spent with the students writing their letters, using the letter on the board as a template.
