CVC SHAKE (consonant-vowel-consonant words)
An egg carton is labeled with vowels. Wooden cubes (or relabeled dice) contain the first and last consonants of three letter CVC (consonant - voweo - consonant) words. Students place the vowel cubes in the carton, shake it, and open it to see how many "real" words they have formed.

HOMOPHONE DOMINOES
Homophones are words which sound the same but are spelled differently and have different meanings - English has many homphones. In this domino game players match 36 homophone pairs and use each word correctly in a sentence.

Egg Carton Phonics
Make a simple game to practice letter sounds out of an egg carton. Kids love to shake the carton and open it to discover where the marker landed. This could also be used to practice new words by putting the words on the small, round removable labels used for color coding files, which can easily be replaced as words are mastered.

Eat Your Words - Idioms
Give your students a chance to figure out the "idiom of the day." This file contains a list of American idioms with their meaning, and examples of each idiom used in a sentence. Cut apart the large examples with the sentence and post one each day for students to try to figure out.

NAME IT VOCABULARY GAME
Colorful board game and alphabet cards. Players move around the board by rolling a die. When they land on a space they choose an alphabet card. They then must name a word in that catagory (such as a place, a noun, a 5 letter word) that begins with that letter. Great for expanding vocabulary.
