About reasoning and argumentation

A well-cultivated critical thinker:
  • raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely;
  • gathers and assesses relevant information using abstractions to interpret it effectively;
  • comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards;
  • thinks open-mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognising and assessing, as need be, their assumptions, implications, and practical consequences; and
  • communicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems.

Critical thinking is, in short, self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. It presupposes assent to rigorous standards of excellence and mindful command of their use. It enables effective communication and problem-solving abilities.

Cited from: A reasoning taxonomy for gifted education, Paul Jewell, Flinders University

             Critical thinking is the essential foundation for education, because it is

                    the essential foundation for adaptation to the everyday personal,

                                social   and professional demands of the 21st Century and thereafter.

                                                                       Paul, R. (1993)

I love the phrase itself the well-cultivated critical thinker - hard to find those, however, like looking for a needle in a haystack. They re handy in a problem-solving situation, but it s difficult to imagine a situation in which this well-cultivated person would really be listened to in the end. These days, or has it actually been forever (?), it seems humanity listens to loudness more than anything or anyone else...
(Sorry, not trying to start a discussion here, just flapping my fingers across the keyboard...)
Thanks for the interesting article!
